Dear Potential Standing in the Gap Intern,

First, let me express how pleased I am that you are interested in considering doing the Kairos Gap program. I sincerely hope that your time as a Gapper will be as rich as it has been for the many who have preceded you! GAP is a program designed for young people desiring to learn and grow in serving the Lord, especially in his work among youth. For most interns the year will include exciting service and growth opportunities and should be a powerful time of the Lord working both in us and through us.

Standing in the Gap is meant to be a very special year in your life, thus to decide to spend a year or two in this way is a serious thing that also needs to be a decision to:

  • Strive to live the life of a disciple in a daily way
  • Love and serve generously and from the heart in your assigned Community and living situation
  • Embrace the call of The Sword of the Spirit as an international, ecumenical community
  •  “Set apart” this time as holy and wholly to the service of the Lord and thus specifically to forego pursuing any romantic relationships

If, after reading these materials carefully (there’s lots of important info included), you are interested in applying, you should pray about it and discuss it with your parents, pastoral leaders, youth group leaders, UCO/SPO Director etc. If God seems to be calling you, then you will need to:

  • Fill out an application (available on this site).
  • Obtain two referrals by those who have known you for 2 or more years. (For UCO, SPO and Sword of the Spirit community members: get at least one from a community coordinator or from a UCO/SPO senior staff person.) Place each in a sealed envelope.  Referral forms are available on this site on the application page.
  •  Send your application and the two referrals to our office as soon as possible.
  • Be interviewed … and then assuming you are accepted...
  • Start working on your finances.
  • Get yourself ready for the ride of your life!

The Lord is about great things. Let’s surrender our lives fully to him and allow him to use us for his greater glory!

Yours “Standing in the Gap,” waiting for others,

Mike Shaughnessy
